Kokoroko – 9:30 p.m.

The eight-piece London band released their long-awaited debut album “Could We Be More” in 2022 on Gilles Peterson‘s Brownswood Recordings label. Each song in their work possesses the energy that is at the core of this group’s identity-moving deftly between afrobeat, highlife, soul and funk and taking inspiration from a plethora of other influences, from West Africa to London and the Caribbean. Although the band shares “a similar love and appreciation for afrobeat and high life, whether Fela, King Sunny Ade or Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas,” the range of experiences and influences is clear. The album owes much to the sounds they grew up with. For some it was Nigerian music and soul or reggae and gospel. It reflects London’s peculiar musical fusion containing soul, funk, groove, and afrobeat. The album’s heartbeat resides in London as it evokes both afrobeat and the majestic orchestral soul of 1970s Harlem.
